These two dynamic math educator communities have joined forces again! Your time and expertise is valuable, and spending that time learning alongside fellow math educators in our region is not only relevant, but necessary to transform our classrooms for our young mathematicians. We honor your time, giving you the option of earning 1 hour of college credit from Ashland University. Attend at least 15 seat hours of CRMTC or GCCTM meetings this school year, virtual or in person. "NEO Math Learning Network: 2020-2021 Series"
Math education professionals engage in research-informed, standards-based learning sessions to advance both math teaching and learning for all stakeholders. Learning sessions are hosted by the Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics and/or the Crooked River Math Teachers' Circle . The Crooked River Math Teachers' Circle (CRMTC) is a group of educators who have caught the mathematics bug. We love math, or are at least curious enough to learn something new. We gather in order to experience the joy and creativity of doing mathematics, no strings attached. Mathematics does not involve problem solving, inquiry, sense-making and reasoning, but rather IS all of these things. We believe everyone is a capable mathematician when given the opportunity to truly engage mathematically. We hope that during the process of doing mathematics together we will build relationships among university faculty and area mathematics teachers for the purpose of making mathematics a wonderfully contagious epidemic in our teachers and their classrooms. At each meeting, participants will work together to solve one or two low-floor, high-ceiling tasks. By engaging in these tasks, participants experience first-hand the Standards for Mathematical Practice and "productive struggle." Participants will also deepen their understanding of mathematical content, learn about NCTM's Eight Effective Teaching Practices , and have an opportunity to reflect on their own classroom practice.
Earn at least 12 seat hours for attending all CRMTC meetings this year. For each virtual or in person meeting that you attend, earn up to 1.5 or 3 hours respectively towards the needed 15 hours for graduate credit. Fall semester CRMTC meetings are all virtual on Thursdays, September 17, November 12 and December 10, 2020. Possible virtual meeting dates for spring semester include Thursdays Jan. 14, Feb. 11, Mar. 11, Apr. 8 and May 13, 2021. If we're able to meet in-person, we will instead gather on Saturday, January 23, 2021-AM and PM session, Thursdays, March 11 and May 6, 2021. The purpose of the Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics (GCCTM) is to encourage an active interest in the teaching and learning of mathematics and to work toward the improvement of mathematics education in the Greater Cleveland area. Throughout the school year, GCCTM provides opportunities for professional development and growth in mathematics education at all levels.
Earn 11 seat hours for attending all GCCTM meetings this year, including the September 10 and six subsequent 1-hour monthly evening meetings, two 2-hour Saturday conferences in November and March, and the May 13 Awards Banquet. To earn one hour of graduate credit, you must:
